Our care tips for your shaving accessories
To get the most out of your shaving accessories and extend their lifespan, it's important to know the best cleaning methods. This article outlines the essential steps for maintaining your shaving brush and razor.
Properly Caring for Your Shaving Brush
Brush bristles are ideal for meeting your skin's needs when preparing for shaving. They are particularly known for their water resistance. In a humid environment, badger hairs have characteristics related to softness and resilience, essential for effective exfoliation. Although several checks are carried out before packaging, a new brush may shed some bristles during the first few uses. This is understandable, but it shouldn't be a recurring issue.
Cleaning Your Shaving Brush
First, before using your shaving brush for the first time, wash it in warm, soapy water (below 45°C/113°F), then rinse and gently dry it with a clean cloth before placing it bristle down on your stand.
It is recommended to clean your shaving brush in soapy water or with shampoo at least once a month. This helps remove shaving product residue and dead skin that gets trapped in the knot. You can also use a comb to groom the knot and straighten it if necessary.
It is important never to leave your shaving brush soaking in water or to let it dry bristles up, as this can cause mold and hair loss. Your shaving brush should not be exposed to abrasive substances or water temperatures above 45°C/113°F.
When shaving
We recommend using a good quality shaving soap or shaving cream/gel. The shaving products offered by La Maison du Barbier are specifically designed for use with a shaving brush and for preserving its bristles.
After each shave, rinse your brush thoroughly with lukewarm water (below 45°C). Drain and pat dry lightly with a clean bath towel. Then, it is very important to store your brush on a suitable stand with the bristles facing down. This position will allow any traces of water and moisture to drain from the knot, preventing hair loss or mold. Avoid storing your brush while still damp in a storage box.
Caring for your razor
To properly maintain your razor and ensure optimal blade life, it is essential to follow a few good practices.
After using your razor, start by placing the blades under running water. This helps remove hairs as well as any soap or shaving cream residue that can accumulate between the blades.
For effective cleaning, let the water run from the back to the front of the razor, or shake your razor in a glass of water to avoid wasting water. This trick makes it easier to dislodge hairs and shaving products that prevent a smooth shave.
Once the blades are thoroughly rinsed, gently shake the razor to remove excess water. This step is important because moisture can cause rust to form on the blades, reducing their sharpness and effectiveness. To ensure complete drying, you can also gently pat the blades with a clean towel.
Then, place your razor upright on a stand or in a glass, with the blades facing upwards. This position allows air to circulate around the blades, facilitating quick and complete drying.
Regular maintenance of your shaving brush and razor is essential to maintain their effectiveness and prolong their lifespan. Careful cleaning and proper drying will protect the brush bristles and razor blades from damage caused by moisture and residue.
